The Children of Men — P. D. James
In a near-future England where no child has been born for a generation, historian Theodore Faron lives under an authoritarian government headed by his cousin. His detached existence changes when he encounters a small group challenging the regime and seeking a future for a society without one. Published in 1992, P. D. James’s dystopian novel extends her moral and psychological interests beyond detective fiction. Its treatment of infertility, political legitimacy, faith, responsibility, and hope invites serious discussion about what sustains civilization when demographic continuity and confidence in the future have disappeared.
