Guided Kayak Eco-Tour: Explore Flooded Cypress Forest at Lake Charlotte
Details
LOCATION SIGNIFICANCE
Lake Charlotte is the one of largest cypress tree swamp in Texas, part of a complex of at least four lakes that lie to the east of the Trinity River Delta. Hundreds of shorebirds are feeding on the shallow lake bottom. White ibises, herons, eagles, beavers, wild hogs, deer, snakes, and alligators call Lake Charlotte home.
Lake Charlotte was inhabited for hundreds of years by ancient Native
Americans whose diet include clam shells. These clams lived in the muddy bottoms of the lakes; they would be unflavored by modern standards. Clams were an important food source for the original inhabitants who consumed them in large numbers and left piles of discarded shells throughout the area, including at our kayak launch. Change in the composition of the lake waters greatly decreased their numbers and few, if any, are to be found today.
