Reel Philosophers: What do we owe each other?
Vorboss Ltd, 10 Exchange Square, Greater London, GB*Optional fee. Details on how to attend for free below.
What do we owe each other?
— This is one of the most fundamental issues of political and moral philosophy and our common lives.
In Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), a hitman who lives by the 18th-century Samurai code Hagakure serves a small-time mobster as his “retainer.” His strict moral code and loyalty stand out in stark contrast to the corrupt, self-serving world of the gangsters and perhaps to our lives, too.
We'll watch film clips to explore questions such as:
– How far should loyalty extend?
– Is it an important value in our time?
– Who deserves our friendship, commitment or respect?
– What do I have to do and what kind of person do I have to be to deserve such attention in return?
– Do loyalty and honour clash? And do we truly respect those who behave honourably?Inspired by the tradition of Ancient Greek symposia, Reel Philosophers nights help sharpen critical thinking through themed screenings and discussions gently guided by professional philosophers.
Philosophy will meet art in the Vorboss luminous office, which connects the local business community. Vorboss is a leading London internet provider, now with managed IT and cybersecurity.

Film Club: Between Dream and Delusion (secret film)
St Hilda's East Community Centre, 18 Club Row, Shoreditch, E2 7EY, London, GBThis month: A band of explorers drifts deeper into an uncharted wilderness, chasing visions of boundless wealth and glory. As the river carries them further from the world they know, ambition curdles into obsession, and the fragile line between dream and delusion dissolves. What begins as a collective quest becomes a stark meditation on power, madness, and the human desire to master both nature and destiny—only to discover how easily they undo us. Can you guess the film? Or come and find out on the day!
PFA Film Club hosts free screenings of thought-provoking films, followed by a discussion about the raised philosophical issues, for general public. In 2025 meetings are held every third WEDNESDAY of the month at the Cafe of St. Hilda's East Community Centre, 18 Club Row, London E2 7EY. The nearest station is Shoreditch High Street on the Overground. The screening starts at 6:30 pm and we need to vacate the building by 9:00pm. We offer complimentary light refreshments during the event.
