What do we owe each other?
— This is one of the most fundamental issues of political and moral philosophy and our common lives.
In Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), a hitman who lives by the 18th-century Samurai code Hagakure serves a small-time mobster as his “retainer.” His strict moral code and loyalty stand out in stark contrast to the corrupt, self-serving world of the gangsters and perhaps to our lives, too.
We'll watch film clips to explore questions such as:
– How far should loyalty extend?
– Is it an important value in our time?
– Who deserves our friendship, commitment or respect?
– What do I have to do and what kind of person do I have to be to deserve such attention in return?
– Do loyalty and honour clash? And do we truly respect those who behave honourably?
Inspired by the tradition of Ancient Greek symposia, Reel Philosophers nights help sharpen critical thinking through themed screenings and discussions gently guided by professional philosophers.
Philosophy will meet art in the Vorboss luminous office, which connects the local business community. Vorboss is a leading London internet provider, now with managed IT and cybersecurity.

Film clubs co-produced by Reputy and Philosophy for All are part of the Human RenAIssance series of interdisciplinary events in Fleet Street Quarter and beyond, aiming to connect the business community and develop human intelligence.
