The Song Beyond
Kate Adams leads us through an experience of poetry, what she calls “The Song Beyond.” By listening for the music behind a particular poem, she invites us to enter that space where the Muse appears, where we allow “dolphin” words to arise in response, to “come up for air.” Taking poetry as the foundation of literature—both historically and linguistically—we’ll experience a poem’s distillation of language; that experience can open us to our own flow in fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose.

Born in San Francisco and now living in Mountain View, Kate Adams has won awards from the Massachusetts Artists’ Foundation in poetry and in fiction. She has maintained a daily writing practice for over forty years, and sings the praises of poetic form, especially sonnets and ballads. She has served as the editor-in-chief of Fault Zone and is currently serving as its poetry editor. Poets of influence include Petrarch, Matthew Arnold, and Wallace Stevens.
