Kayak & Sunfish Sailing on Indian River Lagoon

This Saturday from 10am to 3pm we'll be set up at the 45th Street Pier (next to Grand Harbor in Vero Beach) with kayaks and Sunfish sailboats. Come out and play on the water! The wind will pick up as the day progresses, so it'll better to "learn" early and "sail" later, but you can come for the day and try both if you wish.

NOTE: The launch site is off 45th Street. DO NOT enter Grand Harbor through the guard gate even though the address below says: "Grand Harbor Club House". (That was the only address close to get the map point).

This is a donation-based event. In addition to fun, the purpose of today’s event is to raise enough money to pay for the boat storage facility. We’ve been covering the food and beverages for our events with recent donations and have been ab;e to help some families in need, but we’ve fallen way short on covering the cost of storing and maintaining the kayaks and sailboats. I can’t keep paying for it myself, so that’s what these donations will go toward. A suggested donation of $30 to $40 per person is appreciated.

If you’re experienced and can safely handle a kayak or Sunfish, you can use the equipment at your convenience for the day.
If you’re new to sailing or kayaking, I’ll give you a lesson. Anyone who can’t swim must wear a life jacket — we’ll provide one.

What this location offers: For kayaking, we'll paddle through the private Grand Harbor Marina into the Audubon Preserve. You can visit Bedford Island, explore the estuaries and tributaries, and go under the golf cart bridges into a protected no-motorboat area. This spot often has a pod of manatees and varied wildlife including an amazing variety of birds. The Lagoon in this area is also home to some pretty friendly dolphin, and the water is only 3 to 4 feet deep.

For sailors, this spot is good for learners and experienced sailors alike. It has good visibility, safety, and soft sand. It has open space with good wind potential and is perfect for when you want to go fast or happen to fall out (not likely- but you can just stand up if you do).

Note: There are no restrooms at the launch site. I will have sunscreen, bug spay, beverages, and snacks, but NO sandwiches.

Afterward, people are welcome to come back to my house in Grand Harbor to clean up, jump in the pool, and I’ll throw some burgers on the grill.
