IFDA’s weekly International Folk Dances are attended by people, most of whom are not members of Meetup.com. Since you are reading this, you are probably looking to try something different and indeed we are.
We enjoy doing dances from many countries and ethnic groups from all over the world. The music ranges across traditional folk styles, to contemporary, through a fusion of folk and contemporary music. The dances are fun and exciting as the dance rhythms are a blend of the common forms (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8) and of the unique forms (5/16, 11/16, 7/8, 7/16), sometimes called crooked-music because of the odd numbers of beats.
You won't need a partner as most dances are in circles and lines that do not require partners. You'll meet people from a wide range of backgrounds and you'll have a great time.
It takes some dancers a little time to get used to the different types of dances and music, so don't expect to learn everything on your first night - there is a lot to be learned, and in the end it's worth the effort.
We are very casual; just wear comfortable clothes and shoes. We look forward to dancing with you!
