Pilot Cove/Slate Rock Loop, the Hike

Darlene will host a hike on the Pilot Cove/Slate Rock Loop in Pisgah Forest;
Hidden deep within the Mills River area of Pisgah National Forest, this trail has rhododendrons and Mtn laurel. And, at the top, there is a great view from the Forked Ridge Pluton. Probably the BEST Fall color view.
At the Pluton, we will cajole the friendly resident timber rattler, Fred.
Difficulty: Rocky with roots with a ½ mile very steep uphill section. The return to the cars is on a boring 2-mile section of the gravel Yellow Gap Rd.
IF YOU HAVE AN ORANGE VEST; WEAR IT. HUNTING SEASON HAS STARTED. ;-) THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE AT WALMART....

Social ‘hour’ at 9:15 am. Tour guide leaves at 9:30 am
Hike Distance: 7 mi Total; Accum ascent: 1200 ft Pace: 2.0mph
Drive time: ½ hr; 12 mi 1-way
Return Not earlier than: 2:30pm (=5.0 hrs)
Carpool contributions appreciated. $3.00 suggested

We suggest slightly open windows while carpooling. Only you know your own health status so judge accordingly if an event may endanger your health or the health of others.
Please bring an extra pair of shoes to avoid bringing your muddy shoes into the driver's car at the end of the hike.
