Shrink Pot Green Woodworking Workshop - July 25th

The Lumber District, 1400 E Geer St Warehouse #2 Bay #15, Durham, NC 27704, Durham, NC, US

Join us for this one day green woodworking shrink pot workshop! Shrink pots are a wooden container made by hollowing out a piece of freshly cut "green" wood and inserting a dry wooden base. As the wet outer wood dries, it shrinks and tightens around the base, creating a perfectly sealed, glue-free joint. The process is a meaningful introduction to green woodworking.
The class will cover selection of material and methods of forming the core. We’ll cut and shape dry softwood plugs, and form the mating groove in the base of the vessel. A key element of the process will be understanding (and predicting!) the behavior of freshly cut wood as it dries. The basic principles learned in this class can be applied to all kinds of traditional joinery. They should encourage the maker’s directive to interact with the material in effective and meaningful ways.

    Tools and Materials are provided.
Class will take place on July 25th, and run from 9am - 4pm.
