Join Cary Institute Wildlife Biologist Mike Fargione at 10 AM on Sept. 12 (rain date) 9/26) for an interpretive hike where we explore the ecology and management of one of nature’s ecosystem engineers, the American beaver. Using examples found on the Cary 2000-acre property, we will interpret how beavers have shaped past and current landscapes, explore the rich biodiversity of beaver ponds, and see examples of the conflicts that arise when beavers reestablish themselves in areas now occupied by humans. The event will combine moderately easy walks on paved roads and some unpaved, uneven terrain, with car hopping to different parts of the property. We will meet at the Cary parking area on the east side of Route 82 (41.792555399787496, -73.75495350439687, across Route 82 from the Cary greenhouse complex; 0.7 miles north on Route 82 from the junction of 82 and US Route 44 in Washington Hollow, NY). Dress for the weather, wear appropriate shoes, bring water and binoculars if you have them. Must register with the leader.
