Sunset History Hike at Longview and Ocawana Point.

Details

It’s important to read all the info.

It's time to do our annual Sunset History Hike which is an easy half hike that entails and extensive exploration of a once fabulous estate with a ruined horse racing track, followed by chilling on the River to see a breathtaking sunset. We walk out in deep twilight so bring a flashlight.

MEETUP LOCATION VERY TRICKY TO FIND WITH LIMITED PARKING. SEE BELOW. THERE IS MUCH OFF TRAIL. SEE BELOW. All waitlisted. Regulars and known carpoolers preferred while endeavoring to add some newbies.

Suggested donation: $5.00 as Meetup has doubled the fee they charge me.

In 1890 a great estate known as Longview was created overlooking the Hudson River. In addition to the mansion, there were three other houses, many out-buildings, a pond house and a thoroughbred racetrack on the property. It was THE place to be! We'll explore this place, {also known as Oscawana Park, and the McAndrews Estate}, hear the history, hike the racetrack and see the ruins. I have great pics! We'll also hike a loop through the adjacent Graff Sanctuary and have a snack break there. What's that funky ruin? Then we'll continue on to Oscawana Pt., which is a very beautiful spot right on the River. We'll hang there and hopefully see a magnificent sunset. Around 4ish miles. Easy, flat, knolls, overgrown in parts.

***The bushwhack/off trail: We will absolutely be off trail at times. Currently the weeds are about a foot tall. Easy to manage. No briars. We'll walk straight thru most of it with brief pauses, but there will be on and off contact with standing weeds. There is poison ivy. We will NOT walk thru it but there will be times it'll be nearby. It's not a problem. Long pants very strongly recommended. We will also cross train tracks. They aren't electrified. This too isn't a problem, rather, fun! IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS DO NOT SIGN UP.

No bathrooms. There's a very nearby BP Gas/Dunkin.

Directions: Oscawana Boat Dock Trailhead is on Cortlandt St, immediately off of Maiden Lane and very close to Furnace Dock Rd. The latter 2 roads connect to the main rd, Albany Post Rd. At Albany Post Rd and Maiden Lane, there is a BP Gas/Dunkin. Unless you're confident your gps will lead you to the trailhead, use the BP as a landmark. 2030 Albany Post Rd Croton-on-Hudson 10520. From that BP, go left on Maiden Lane which is immediately north and adjacent to BP, and resembles a driveway. Turns into a dirt rd. At the end, look left. That's it.

NO GUESTS, pets, early outs. Everyone is expected to keep up and stay with the Group. Liability waiver signature required. If you’re on the waitlist you just can’t show up.

Lets combine some hiking, history and a sunset for a wonderful, memorable evening!
