Kayak Wappingers Creek Terminus & Hudson River, Dutchess
Details
PADDLE THE WAPPINGERS CREEK AS IT ENTERS THE HUDSON RIVER & A SHORT ROCK SCRAMBLE HIKE TO THE SCENIC WAPPINGERS FALLS
This trip explores the terminus of the Wappinger Creek as it drains into the Hudson River. The water will be tidal as it meets the Hudson.
It's a nice little paddle that offers nice views of the creeks' steep bank that has prevented development. We'll paddle as far north as we can on the creek passing by the old bleachery which in its heydey almost a century ago employed over 1,000 people but then was abandoned for decades and only recently is starting to see a rebirth. Just past here we'll disembark briefly for a short scramble to take in the views of the falls that gave the village its name. A courageous few may wish to cliff jump (signed release of liability required). We then return to our boats and try to time it to watch the sunset over the Hudson River from under the Train Bridge.
Many birds and wildlife reside here, including the invasive species the water chestnut, which may make paddling difficult along the shore (the current carves a nice paddling stream in the center). We'll paddle downstream, into the Hudson and circumnavigate an island with interesting development and then turn around for the return paddle.
