What we’re about
Hello!!! This group is for hikers and walkers of all abilities who want to get out in a supportive, group setting in the Hudson Valley. Most events will be within an hour of the Newburgh area.
There will be a mixture of walks for all abilities, and hikes for the more experienced hikers, though at a relaxed pace. If you want to run through the woods this is not the group for you.
Although we travel at a relaxed-moderate pace, most of the hikes will require a reasonable level of fitness and agility and some will not be for beginners and will be posted as such.
Most hikes will range from about 4 miles to 6 miles and will be accurately described according to difficulty. The pace will be relaxed- moderate, but not terribly slow, with uphill climbs being taken at a slower pace and rest stops for breath catching. No one will be left behind. Typically the time for the hike, from start to end, will be about 3-6 hours. I'll expect the group to stay together, and no one will be left behind. Occasionally the group may be asked to hike in silence for awhile in order to fully appreciate the beauty of our magnificent area. The terrain for the HIKES will typically NOT BE EASY. There will be rocks on the trail, rock-hopping across small streams, occasional short clambers up over some rocks, and significant climbs. The reward will be beautiful scenery, wild flowers, waterfalls, etc. and some great exercise. I hope our hikes will be a group effort while establishing an intimate hub of regulars who get to know and look forward to seeing each other. I appreciate your input and requests for any hikes you'd like to do.
If all this appeals to you, join up and welcome to you!

Giant Stairs/Long Path Loop!!!
State Line Lookout, Exit 3 Palisades Parkway North, Alpine, NJ, USHere is a very cool hike, a wonderful scramble, a hike that is for the experienced hikers/scramblers only. There is a mile of rocky adventure which is not for beginners or those with improper footwear.
So....experienced with me hikers only please. If I have not hiked/scrambled with you please send me a private note with your recent scrambling experience. If you don't you will be removed from the event.
It is billed as 4 hours, 4.5 miles, STRENUOUS by NYNJTC. This is one of my favorites.
There is significant continuous ascent and decent involved. Feel free to contact me if you are wondering if you are good to do this if you have hiked with me.
NO DOGS. No guests.
From their description: This loop hike descends the Palisades cliffs, follows a challenging, rocky path along the Hudson River, passes a scenic waterfall, and climbs to reach a panoramic viewpoint over the river.
Scrambling is tricky stuff and sure footing is necessary for this. Please don't sign up if you've never hiked or scrambled before.
Bring: Snacks, water, first aid kit, camera. Hiking shoes/boots mandatory. You may want grippy garden gloves for scrambling. Dress in layers, and NO cotton if it is cold out including jeans.
There is some poison ivy along our route. I have found that Dawn dish soap and/or hand sanitizer works fabulously!!! I will bring enough sanitizer for all, and soap for after. You may want to put your boots in a bag to wash at home.
We will follow the NYNJTC trip description for this at http://nynjtc.org/hike/giant-stairslong-path-loop-state-line-lookout
GPS coordinates for the State Line Lookout 40.988702,-73.907154.
Driving directions: If you are coming from the north on the Palisades Parkway, bear left just beyond Exit 3 and follow the signs for the State Line Lookout. Follow the access road for about half a mile until it ends at a large parking lot near the lookout.
From the south take the Palisades Interstate Park north from the George Washington Bridge. Continue for 1.7 miles beyond Exit 2, and turn right at a sign for the State Line Lookout.
We can carpool from 9W/Cornwall area. Post if you want to carpool. We will likely dine afterwards.
ALL HIKES or WALKS ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. By signing up you certify that you have read and agree to the Liability Waiver on the Discussions page. Thanks!!!
$2 Meetup fee. WET ROCKS will very likely postpone things. Rain will definitely postpone. Check back for changes especially the day of the event. Please send me your cell if I don't have it, I will return with mine. Happy scrambling!!!6 attendees
