Calls Are Needed - Family Pet Shot to Death by Animal Control Office (Richland Parish)

Dear Friends and Volunteers,

Each and every day we receive frantic calls from the public about animal cruelty.  This latest tragedy, however, could have easily prevented if only the animal control officer had shown some restraint or compassion, but he did neither.  In many rural areas of our state, it is not uncommon for residents or even law enforcement officers to shoot stray dogs, if they appear to be threatening their livestock or family members.

However, in this case, a 12 month-old family pet was loose and had returned to his home, to evade capture by the local animal control officer, who is also a commissioned officer with the Delhi Police Dept in Richland Parish.  Instead of leaving the dog (who was not vicious) or contacting the owners to contain him, the officer pulled out his handgun and shot the dog to death, leaving the poor dog to be found by their owners a short time later.

Please take two actions to prevent similar events from taking place.  First, read the report filed by a sister of the owner of the dog (it is heartbreaking.) Second, call the Delhi Chief of Police, Mr. Steven Harris, at[masked] and demand that Larry Copes, the officer involved, be reassigned to another position and charged with cruelty to animals.  You can remain anonymous.  Make this call to honor the life of Red and demand justice in his name.

incidentdescription         : My sister called me today to tell me that the dog catcher, Larry Copes (a licensed plumber), shot her dog (Solei, but I called him Red). She was very upset, stating that she returned home last night to find blood and membrane scattered underneath her carport and on the walls. She said that she went to the police station and was told by Chief of Police Lee Harrell's brother that he was told the dog was loose dragging a chain in the neighborhood and that her neighbor called to report the dog as being loose. Red (our pup) was only 12 months old. When I called the police station, I spoke with Larry Copes and asked that he give me a description of what happened yesterday. He stated that he got a call about the dog being loose, and when his hand (helper) tried to get the dog on the truck he jumped off the truck, so Larry said he got out and shot the dog. When I asked him where did he shoot him, he said at the end of the driveway, so I said, you shot h!
im in his yard? He said yeah, but we had to get him. He said that they had tazed him and he got a loose. So I said to Larry that my sister said that there is blood and membrane splattered all over her carport. He then said that they had to get him so they shot him underneath her carport....actually, this is the spot he usually sleeps at. Why did this man kill my sister's dog?! I am upset because this is cruelty to an animal. Red was not aggressive, nor had he gotten lose to our knowledge. He had no right to enter onto private property and after stating that he had tied the dog up several times, why would he kill him there? Why do people think animals have no feeling? Larry chose to execute my sister's dog and just didn't care. He took Red away without so much as calling her or contacting anyone in our family. We live in a pretty small town. When I asked him why he just didn't call, he said there was no time. Why is that? There is always time, especially when he tracked Red !
down, Red was in his own yard. I don't think Larry should get !
off easy. I have seen him in my neighbors yard, and has killed 3 of her animals just for sitting in the yard. People need to realize that just because an animal is sitting in the yard, it does not mean that the animal is a stray. I feel this is criminal tresspassing and unlawfully discharging a firearm on private property. I talked to my sister and she is upset. I told her that she should speak with the Mayor and apparently she knows already that no one is going to do anything because it won't bring him back. Please help me to STOP the Violence towards animal cruelty. Animals are not pets, they are our Family. I feel sorry for my sister. She is emotionally stressed and had to go to the doctor. And after that is over, she has to return home to clean up the blood that they spilled of my beloved friend, Red. That will be the end of Solei. She only has Max now (her shephard). I can only imagine how he feels having witnessed it and all. It is saddening, very heartbreaking and cr!
uel thing for someone to do.

anythingelse                : Help us. My sister is hurt, and I'm deeply hurt by this. It should have never happened. Even if he was loose, pet owners have the right to be notified that their pets have gotten lose. And as I stated earlier, no one has ever notified us that this has happened. Please contact my sister for photos.
