Hey Jeff,

I'm still waiting on my work hours for this day but if I can help in between, I will. I may not be able to but I'll try.

Dear Friends of the Humane Society of Louisiana,

We could use your help this Sunday!!!! The Humane Society of Louisiana receives a donation from the Krewe of Barkus for every volunteer who registers under our name!  Please read the following and support our efforts to help abused animals in our city and throughout the state:

The Humane Society of Louisiana cordially invites you to come out on Superbowl Sunday and help us help Barkus organize their parade!  YOU WON'T EVEN MISS THE GAME!

In turn, Barkus will donate proceeds to the Humane Society of Louisiana for each volunteer we can provide for them.

If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to [address removed] and include your name, address and phone number (day and evening). Make sure to tell us if you have any preferences or physical limitations, i.e. time of shift, walking, sitting, etc.  Dionne, our Outreach Coordinator, will then submit all names of HSL volunteers to Barkus.

When you arrive at the event, be sure to let the Barkus representative know you are a Humane Society of Louisiana volunteer, as we are the rescue group you will be representing.

Want to watch the Saints go marching into the Superbowl?  Barkus runs an hour early this year to allow fans to do just that!  What day could be better than one spent helping to save animals THEN watching our beloved Saints play out every fan's dream game?

Here are the volunteer rules per Barkus.org:

WE'LL THROW YOU A BONE, MONSIEUR!
WE NEED AND LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS

Our through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who set up the park, man our booths and act as Krewe Marshalls in the parade. Shifts are available: 7am-11am
setup & check-in; 10-2pm booth manning; 1pm-4pm booth manning and krewe marshalls.

WE ARE VERY SORRY, but we ask that Volunteers do not bring their dogs while working the event. We are firm believers that if your pet is with you, even if leashed and well-behaved, they deserve your full attention. If you volunteer for us, we would like to have your full attention during your shift period. Every volunteer position is very important to the success of our event, and to the organizations the proceeds benefit.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS Many area high schools now require students to complete a large number of community service hours by the time they are a junior. We would love for you - and your schoolmates - to help us with our parade, work merchandise booths, be a walk-around and keep the area clean and free of litter during our Pawty at the Park, or be a Krewe Marshall and walk with the parade helping to keep order and the parade moving. Practically all positions require at least two people to operate, so enlist your best friend and have a ton of fun while you're at it.

We will require all minors, not accompanied by an adult, to check-in accompanied by their transporting adult, and when volunteer shift is finished, you will be required to stay on park property and check-out with the Park Volunteer Coordinator accompanied by the parent or adult guardian who is transporting you from the park. This is the only way we can be sure of your safe whereabouts at all times. A parent or adult guardian is welcome to stay on park property and enjoy the event during your volunteer shift, but must still check-out with Park Volunteer Coordinator when they are leaving the property with minors in their charge.

Some of the organizations that we benefit contact us during the year to obtain volunteers from us and we would love to be able to refer you to some very worthy organizations working for a very worthy cause - the rescue, shelter and adoption of homeless animals.

In addition most of the organizations have a foster program and are always looking for temporary housing/shelter for homeless animals, particularly animals too young to spay/neuter, i.e. puppies and kittens. If this is something your household would enjoy doing contact the organizations directly and tell them you got their name from the Barkus website.

Proceeds from Barkus 2008 benefited Animal Rescue New Orleans, Looziana Basset Rescue, Friends of Jefferson Animal Shelter, Humane Society of Louisiana, Riverlands SPCA, Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue, Gulf South Golden Retriever Rescue, Animal Assistance League of Slidell, and Tangipahoa Adopt A Rescue (TAAR) and are based on your volunteer participation for the parade.  Proceeds are distributed the following year at our Mardi Gras ball at the Windsor Court Hotel.

The parade will roll on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 1pm.  The Pawty starts at 10:30 on the corner of Orleans and Rampart St.   The theme is - "Barkus goes Tailgating - The Dogs go Barking In"

Margaret Orr's dog, Bleu, has been named King of Barkus 2010. Margaret has been the Chief meteorologist for WDSU in New Orleans since 1979. Margaret has been a long time supporter of Barkus and we cant wait for her to lead the Barkus parade this year. The founders of Barkus started the Margaret Orr Fan Club and it was at one of their Margaret Orr Fan Club meetings that the idea for Barkus was born.

All Hail Barkus!

Thank you for your valuable time in reading this letter, and for considering the gift of still more of your valued time to help us save animals and support Barkus!
