What is Humanism?

It has been said on numerous occasions that Humanism is hard to define. In this VCR, three past presidents of Humanists of Minnesota will explain just what Humanism means to them. Before they make their appearance, the late Gordon Morris will set the stage by giving the AHA 's definition. After that Paul Heffron, Hiero Russell, and George Erickson will relate what Humanism mean to them. There will also be an appearance by Fred Edwords who will give his definition. The logic of definitions is quite complex. Unless we are clear about the point and purpose of a definition, its context in use and inquiry, it may create more difficulties than it solves. You should come and decide for ourself as to whether the definitions given are clear or if it just tend to confuse the picture that you have about Humanism. You will be given a chance in the discussion period to express just how you define Humanism. Ron Scribner

A good meeting of the MN Humanist Society for getting to know the basic underlying ideas that humanists have.

I started coming to the society's meetings a couple months ago and have found them fascinating and welcoming. I'm looking forward with great interest to discussions regarding a definition of Humanism. It seems to me that the ideals and concepts that are attached are much like the energy of realistic hope that drove the recent elections. People who look with energy towards a future without dogmatism, should find great affiliation with Humanism.
