Lobby for Civil Liberties at the State Capitol

Join a HumanistsMN contingent to attend the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota's Lobby Day. The ACLU fights for causes that reflect humanist values, including civil liberties, civil rights, social justice, and separation of religion and government. Let's show up at the State Capitol to lend our support!

ACLU-MN is fighting for a variety of issues in this legislative session, including a bill that HMN has been working on that would ensure that individuals who are legally required to participate in a drug or alcohol recovery program have access to secular options.

Known as the Minnesota Recovery Options Act, it would bar state agencies and courts from requiring anyone to participate in religious elements of treatment to which they object (for example, 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous). You can find a summary of the bill here.

The day will start with a rally in the Rotunda, followed by meetings with legislators.

The ACLU is also giving priority to these measures:

• Ending qualified immunity, a legal doctrine that makes it difficult to hold police and other government agents responsible for their actions.
• Bills to end the use of faulty facial recognition technology by the police.
• Making it illegal for the police to seize, keep, and sell private property, even when no one is charged with a crime.

The rally starts at 9 a.m. Meetings with legislators begin at 9:45 a.m. for those who are interested.
