Humanist Film Series: Pleasantville

Details

Join us the second Friday of each month for an entertaining and discussion-worthy film as part of the Humanist Film Series. Next up, on June 13, we'll be screening Pleasantville (1998 - PG-13).

This moral fable about the difficulties of balancing tradition with modernity incorporates a very clever visual technique to signify characters' stages of growing self-awareness. You'll just have to come and see it with us to know what we mean. It features Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon as modern siblings who are 'sent' into a 1950s B&W television sitcom called Pleasantville. The inevitable clash of cultures leads to a variety of difficult choices and lays bare the collateral damage that occurs when a moral code is too inflexible, too binary -- too 'black and white'.

A film truly ahead of its time, Pleasantville's reputation has only grown over the past quarter-century and seems even more timely and relevant today.

It's BYOB but snacks will be provided. Arrive around 6:30pm for the pre-show meet and greet; the film will start promptly at 7:00pm followed by some post-movie discussion for those who care to linger and mingle. Of course, bring a friend, meet a friend, or come make a new friend!
