Many of us talk about critical thinking, but what mindset is actually necessary to become a critical thinker? How do our beliefs about knowledge and knowing affect how we value critical thinking and apply it in our lives? Join us to explore how one's personal epistemology influences our ability to think critically.

The presentation and discussion will be from 3:00—4:30, facilitated by HumanistsMN member Matt Brennecke. Afterwards, join other Secular Saturday attendees in the gallery for refreshments and socializing.

In this presentation we will discuss:

  • What is critical thinking?
  • How our personal epistemology, our beliefs about knowledge and knowing, determines our incentive to think critically
  • How developmental models can help us understand our relationship to our beliefs
  • How difficult is adult transformation to critical thinking?
  • Critical thinking as a set of values
  • Promoting critical thinking as a means to strengthen democracy

Speaker: Matt Brennecke is a retired IT professional and describes himself as an amateur epistemologist and systems thinker. He completed post-graduate studies in Human Science at Saybrook University with concentrations in consciousness and belief systems. His passions include a love of hiking, skiing, and canoeing and general communion with the natural world. He believes that understanding and promoting critical thinking may possibly be the key to saving democracy and the planet.
