This is it! The film that prompted the whole idea of the Humanist Film Series last spring. Join us on Friday, December 12th from 6:30 – 9:30 PM for a screening of Scrooge (1970, G), a joyous, scary, touching and delightful musical version of A Christmas Carol.

With hummable, toe-tapping songs from two-time Oscar-winning composer Leslie Bricusse, standout performances from Albert Finney, Edith Evans and Alec Guinness (as Marley), and colorful, lavish set decoration and costumes splashed across the screen that make Dickens’ London come alive – this film will fill you up with Holiday cheer.

Snacks will be provided but bring your own beverage of choice. Arrive around 6:30pm for the pre-show meet and greet; the film will start promptly at 7:00pm followed by some post-movie discussion for those who care to linger and mingle.

When Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843 he penned what many consider to be the ultimate non-religious, humanist expression of the Holiday Season. Guess what? It all boils down to being decent to each other while we’re still alive. It’s also a heckuva good ghost story. While numerous film versions from the past century, some good and some awful, have flooded the public consciousness, this superb musical offering with Albert Finney as Ebeneezer Scrooge has largely been missed by most.

Looking ahead, mark your calendar for Friday, January 9, 2026 when we’ll be showing Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (1991, PG-13). Though wrapped inside of a murder mystery in 1920s Alabama, this film is actually a comedy/mystery about a multi-generational group of intrepid, self-empowered women who dare to find their voices in a world dominated by men. Based on the novel by award-winning author Fannie Flagg.
