The Humanist Film Series continues into the new year on Friday, January 9, 2026 when we’ll be screening Fried Green Tomatoes (1991, PG-13). Arrive around 6:30 PM for snacks and a little socializing; the film starts at 7:00 PM. Bring your own beverage.

Featuring Oscar-winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy, Fried Green Tomatoes weaves a multi-generational tale about women finding their voices in a world dominated by men. There is an unresolved murder mystery from 1920s Alabama that frames the plot, but the true story revolves around women from two different eras who confront gender inequity, racism and a caste system in America that continues to benefit white men over everyone else. It’s funny, touching, thought-provoking and still relevant today, thirty-five years after it was made.

Again, bring your own beverage. Snacks will be provided but feel free to bring something to share if you'd like. Arrive around 6:30pm for the pre-show meet and greet; the film will start promptly at 7:00pm followed by some post-movie discussion for those who care to linger and mingle.

Looking ahead, mark your calendar for Friday, February 13, 2026 when we’ll be showing Under the Tuscan Sun (2003, PG-13), a dramedy about starting over, forging a family from those around you and renovating a crumbling Italian villa on a budget in gorgeous Tuscany. It’s a film about resilience in the face of adversity and recognizing new possibilities, with an occasional gelato for moral support.
