Humanist Film Series: "Under the Tuscan Sun"
Details
Join us for our February movie night when we’ll be screening Under the Tuscan Sun (2003, PG-13). As always, bring your own beverage. Snacks will be provided but feel free to bring something to share if you'd like.
Arrive around 6:30pm for the pre-show meet and greet; the film will start promptly at 7:00pm followed by some post-movie banter for those who care to linger and mingle.
What would you do if the life you’d built disintegrated all around you and you had to start all over? Right, you’d buy a decrepit villa in Tuscany, Italy, and begin refurbishing it with hardly any money and no expertise! This film follows a middle-aged woman (Diane Lane) who throws caution to the wind, opens herself up to new experiences and says ‘Yes!’ to life. Along the way she builds a new family out of the cast-off pieces around her. It’s an uplifting film with a message that’s relevant for an age in which we are increasingly isolating ourselves from each other.
Mark your calendar: Following the group’s suggestion, on Friday, March 13, 2026 we’ll do our first ever Humanist Film Series Short Film Festival. With the Oscars scheduled for 3/15/2026, we’ll tie-in with a half dozen or so Academy Award-winning short films, including The Red Balloon (1956) and The Man Who Planted Trees (1987). There may also be a few surprises and plenty to talk about.
This film series is co-sponsored by HumanistsMN and First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, a humanist congregation. Please consider supporting one or both of these associations to help cover our costs and build the humanist movement. Click on the embedded links above to donate or join.
