Informed or Influenced? Media Literacy in the Digital Age @ Humanist Gathering
Details
Every day, we’re flooded with headlines, hot takes, viral videos, and AI-generated content. But how much of what we see is accurate — and how much is designed to manipulate, provoke, or profit?
In this interactive presentation, we’ll explore:
· Short history of media and media literacy
· The psychology behind misinformation and confirmation bias
· How to quickly evaluate sources and claims
· How algorithms shape what you see (and what you don’t)
· Practical tools for spotting misleading content
· How AI is changing the media landscape
Whether you’re a casual news reader, a content creator, a parent, an educator, or just someone who wants to think more clearly in a noisy world — this session will give you practical skills you can use immediately.
Come ready to question, discuss, and rethink how to consume information. Because media literacy isn’t about being cynical. It’s about being empowered. Join us for an engaging, thought-provoking session — and leave with sharper tools for navigating today’s information ecosystem.
The presentation and discussion will be from 3:00—4:30, facilitated by HumanistsMN members Matt Brennecke, Dayna Wolhart, and Kazi Ahmed Habib. Afterwards, join other Secular Saturday attendees in the gallery for refreshments and socializing.
