Humanist Film Series: Star Trek, Director's Edition
Details
This month we’ll be screening the Director’s Edition of Star Trek – The Motion Picture (G, 1979) released in 2022 with updated special effects and much more. Join us to recognize the life and accomplishments of Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek and AHA’s Humanist Arts Award winner (1991).
Arrive around 6:30 PM for a little socializing; as always, bring your own beverage. Some snacks will be provided but feel free to bring something to share if you'd like. The films start at 7:00 PM followed by a special post-movie presentation for those who care to linger and mingle.
Plan to stick around afterwards to enjoy our guest speaker’s presentation on Roddenberry, Star Trek and the many connections they both have to humanism. Our own resident Trek expert (and past president of HumanistsMN) Scott Lohman will give us an entertaining and informative overview of how the film came to be, the enduring cultural influence of Captain Kirk and the crew of the starship Enterprise, and why science fiction and humanism have always comfortably overlapped. It’s sure to be a unique experience. Don’t miss it!

Then, on May 8, the Humanist Film Series will present a documentary, the first episode (“Georgia”) of the award-winning The Appalachian Trail Odyssey with "Bulldog" Hanson, the fascinating but true story of a blind-since-birth hiker navigating the historic Appalachian Trail with only the aid of his phone’s GPS system. The film was created by our own HMN member, Gary Steffens, who documented the epic achievement every step of the way! Gary will present the film to us and provide us with a lively, interactive Q&A session afterwards. Come and vicariously explore the scenic (and dangerous) Appalachian Trail and marvel at the power of the human spirit to overcome all odds.
