Welcome to our monthly HumanistsMN Science Fiction Book Club! Join us every month -- or come as you are able.

In a nod to the American Empathy Project, our book for May is “Stranger in a Strange Land” by Robert Heinlein. It is the story of the last survivor of a mission to Mars, Valentine Michael Smith. He has been raised by Martians, returns to earth, and has to learn about Earth and humanity. Smith then sets out to help humans relate better to each other, believing that humans are capable of far more than they realize. By embracing love, empathy, and spiritual awareness, they can create a better world.

If you can, bring some clothes and/or accessories for our Empathy Project clothing drive for the Rainbow Wardrobe. See this link for details.

The book discussion will be from 3:00 -- 4:30. Afterwards we'll socialize and celebrate the American Empathy Project with all the days' volunteers over nibbles and beverages in the gallery. Let's come together for a good cause -- promoting empathy!

Our book club facilitator is Scott Lohman, a long-time member of HumanistsMN, serving as president, vice-president, and board member at various times. He is a life-long science fiction reader and chairs a small local sci-fi con held annually in the summer.

HumanistsMN is committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and caring community for all our members. We welcome everyone who shares our humanist principles. We acknowledge the dignity and worth of all people -- every race, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, social class, abilities, or disabilities. We actively promote a culture of respect, belonging, and compassion as we strive to create an environment where everyone can thrive. By participating in HumanistsMN events, you agree to conduct yourself in accordance with these values.
