In July, the Humanist Film Series (HFS) will be shining the spotlight on ‘Spotlight’ (rated R, 2015), the Oscar-winning Best Picture winner from a decade ago. The film is based on the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered a massive child molestation scandal in the Catholic church -- starring Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel MacAdams, Liev Schreiber and the incomparable Stanley Tucci.

Arrive around 6:30 PM for a little socializing; as always, bring your own beverage. Some snacks will be provided but feel free to bring something to share if you'd like. The film starts at 7:00 PM followed by some post-movie discussion for those who care to linger and mingle.

The film demonstrates how important quality investigative journalism is to our society, especially now that we live in an era when news organizations cannot, apparently, afford to continue doing it. Told almost in the style of a murder mystery, the investigative reporters doggedly follow every lead while also fending off pressure from multiple sources, including within their own organization, to drop the story and look the other way. Powerful stuff that shows the full spectrum of human behavior and what we are capable of, both good and bad. Please note the ‘R’ rating for adult subject matter.

This film series is co-sponsored by HumanistsMN and First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, a humanist congregation. Please consider supporting one or both of these associations to help cover our costs and build the humanist movement. Click on the embedded links above to donate or join.
