Information Integrity in the Digital Age @ HumanistsMN Speaker Series

Join us as we kick off the new program year with this timely and critical presentation by Prof. Emily Vraga from the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism! After a summer hiatus, gather with HMN members and friends as we are briefed on insidious media tactics and coached on essential online literacy habits.

Let's shore up our resolve to stay informed and well-connected as we work to resist the dismantling of our democratic institutions! The program begins at 3pm followed by socializing at 4:30pm with door prizes, nibbles, and beverages. Bring a friend! All are welcome!

The rise of digital media and artificial intelligence has complicated efforts for people to find and evaluate quality information. Online algorithms create fierce competition for our attention and news organizations contribute to misunderstandings and mistrust -- especially on science and health topics -- when they focus on conflict or politicize topics unnecessarily. How do we ensure we are getting good information? How can our own online conduct help create a healthier media environment?

Presenter: Emily Vraga is the Don and Carole Larson Professor of Health Communication at the University of Minnesota’s Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Her research tests methods to identify and correct health misinformation on social media, to build trust and allies to promote high quality information, and to encourage attention to more diverse content online. Vraga has published over 100 journal articles and co-authored a book on correcting misinformation on social media. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and has informed efforts to improve information integrity online.
