Sunday Speaker: Mark Klym - Nonviolent Action and Conflict Reconciliation

Details
Sunday Speaker Topic:
Our world has changed. Now, more than ever, we all need to focus on creating a positive PEACE which can be achieved by using ACTIVE NONVIOLENT principles. This interactive and inspirational talk introduces how nonviolence is a courageous way of life, and a powerful strategy for inner peace and uplifting our community.
Description:
This presentation will highlight key aspects from a 16-hour workshop and provides an Orientation to Kingian Nonviolence and Conflict Reconciliation. The audience will get a sense of the leadership skills of Coretta King and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and learn current applications of active nonviolence. The need is clear. As Stacey Billings (HSGP Program Director) stated:
“There's a lot going on right now—a lot of conflict and disagreement between friends, neighbours, and family. Many of our members attend the frequent protests happening around the city, and with masked ICE raids, any one of us could find ourselves in a situation with potential for violence. I feel like our members could really be empowered with some knowledge of Kingian Nonviolence.”
Together, we will take another step toward realizing a nonviolent, just, and compassionate society where everyone can reach their highest potential. In this compassionate society, racial equity, all forms of justice, and conflict reconciliation are the norms. We can achieve these outcomes by using the art and sciences of active nonviolence and conflict reconciliation. As relevant now as they were during the Civil Rights Era, these methods are highly compatible with the 10 Commitments to live Humanist Values.
We'll begin with a candid look at the pervasive nature of violence in our society. Then, we will share selected Kingian Principles and Steps that lay the ‘will’ and ‘skill’ for creating peace and justice within our families and communities. We will highlight examples of the tremendous effectiveness of nonviolent campaigns for personal peace, improved interpersonal relationships, and national movements to end war. To wrap up, we will showcase powerful examples of de-escalation in the heat of conflict, demonstrating how nonviolent practitioners were prepared to transform violence into heartfelt connections.
