## About this event

Phil Portlock is a native Washingtonian, photographer, writer, film producer and social justice activist. With the creative use of images, music and narration by his wife Pat Sloan, the film "Voting Rights: The Struggle To Be Counted" traces the long and often brutal struggle by African Americans to obtain and maintain the right to vote. "A VOTELESS PEOPLE IS A VOICELESS PEOPLE"!
Our rights are under attack. Our democracy is under siege. We’ve been here before, and we know what to do.
On July 17, we honor the anniversary of the passing of civil rights hero John Lewis, not with ceremonies, but with action. Across the country, we will take to the streets, courthouses, and community spaces to carry forward his fight for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all.
This is more than a protest, it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead, and a new front in the struggle for freedom.
Please note: a core principle behind our John Lewis Good Trouble Day actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
