Sunday Speaker Topic: The Psychology of Music - Dr. Jodi Richardson
Psychology of Music
Dr. Jodi Richardson explores the powerful relationship between music and the human mind. Drawing from her expertise in psychology and music therapy, she examines how music influences our emotions, cognition, physiology, and social connections. The presentation highlights how something as universal as music can have profound effects on brain functioning and everyday behavior.
Dr. Richardson begins by introducing the psychological and neurological foundations of music perception, including how the brain processes rhythm, melody, and harmony. She discusses the role of key brain structures involved in emotional regulation, memory, and reward, helping to explain why music can evoke strong emotional responses and vivid autobiographical memories.
The talk also explores the impact of music on mood and mental health. Participants will learn how music can be used to regulate emotions, reduce stress, and enhance focus and motivation. Drawing from music therapy research and practice, Dr. Richardson provides real-world examples of how music-based interventions support individuals physical and mental wellness.
In addition, the presentation examines the social and cultural dimensions of music, including how it fosters identity, connection, and group cohesion. Dr. Richardson highlights how music is used across cultures and contexts—from personal playlists to collective experiences like concerts and rituals—to strengthen bonds and create shared meaning.
Throughout the talk, Dr. Richardson integrates scientific research with practical applications, encouraging participants to think critically about their own musical experiences. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how music shapes thoughts, feelings, and behavior, as well as strategies for using music intentionally to support well-being, learning, and connection in their daily lives.
