America 250 and Beyond: Religious Freedom in America

Join us American Atheists for the first of their America: Beyond 250 speaker series for a conversation about the history of religious freedom in America. The event features renowned historian Professor Steven K. Green in conversation with American Atheists' Legal Director Geoffrey Blackwell and President Nick Fish. Green is the Fred H. Paulus Professor of Law and Affiliated Professor of History at Willamette University and Director of the Center for Religion, Law and Democracy. He’s an expert on the separation of religion and government, a highly sought-after public speaker, and author of The Grand Collaboration: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and the Invention of American Religious Freedom (2024); Separating Church and State: A History (2022); Inventing a Christian America: The Myth of the Religious Founding (2015), and more.

As Legal Director of American Atheists, Geoffrey Blackwell crafts the organization's litigation strategy, monitors federal legislation and policy developments, weighs in on relevant court cases through amicus briefs, and works to educate the legal community through outreach and scholarly writing.

Nick Fish is President of American Atheists and has spent more than 15 years defending the separation of religion and government, advocating for equality under the law, and protecting civil rights for all Americans.
