Every Saturday we meet on Zoom to discuss a topic decided upon the previous week. These are topics of humanist interest, from a humanist perspective.

The topic of the discussion will be decided in a prior meeting, usually two weeks in advance. This week we will be having a HAT Talk -
Humanism and Rationality Across Cultures Presented by John Varghese
Different cultures across the globe (and across time!) cultivate reason, compassion and critical thought in distinct yet universal ways. This 'lived' contrast (as a person of Indian origin living in Canada for the past 25 years) has prompted me to suggest this topic. I would myself have loved to hear someone expound on this topic, but since I haven't heard anything, I volunteer! This would be a call to broaden our view of humanism to include voices and histories that have operated outside of the dominant Western frame - beyond Greece's rationalism or Europe's Renaissance.
But rather than simply pitting East and West, I'd like to focus on how human beings everywhere have sought to give a 'working' voice to reason and compassion. As with any social attribute, this voice has different origins and trajectories across the globe with their own paths, directions, and current states. There are also distortions of imperialism, colonization and other geopolitical economic power games that have played out over time to bring us to where we are globally. And when we succumb to translation bias of history writers, it is incumbent upon us students of truth to de-centre the idea of enlightenment as solely a product of the '"west" and see what is happening to humanism globally. And to do this while avoiding the trap of romanticizing the "east"!

The topic of the discussion will be decided in a prior meeting, usually two weeks in advance. This week’s topic is: Private Property and Common Ground, introduced by Paul Kaplan

Private property and common ground were two central concepts in the 18th century Enlightenment. The English Enlightenment philosopher, John Locke, identified life, liberty, and property as fundamental rights. Consider this passage from The Greatest Sentence Ever Written by Walter Isaacson:
“When men enter into a social contract to empower a government, he [Locke] writes, it is done ‘with an intention in every one the better to preserve himself, his liberty and property.’” p. 25.
Another central concept of the Enlightenment is common ground. Common ground can be understood by examples. Issacson gives the examples of the public works of Benjamin Franklin:
“He [Franklin] not only helped the craft the sentence [in the American Declaration of Independence] that defines our common ground, he lived it. He organized police, fire, and street-sweeping; corps; a public library, hospital, and school; a widows’ pension fund, and a mutual insurance cooperative.” p. 40.
Question to Consider

1. Is property a basic human right?
2. Are there limits on private property? For example, you can own a car but you can’t drive it without a government issued license.
3. Should governments have the power to expropriate private property without compensation?
4. Should governments be able exercise eminent domain for public purposes?
5. What should be included in the common ground?
6. How should the common ground be funded?
7. What should the process be for determining what is private and what is in the common ground?
8. Why do countries differ in what is private and what is in the common ground?
9. What should the limits be on government power as governments levy taxes and administer the common ground?
