Every Saturday we meet on Zoom to discuss a topic decided upon the previous week. These are topics of humanist interest, from a humanist perspective.

The topic of the discussion will be decided in a prior meeting, usually two weeks in advance. This week’s topic is: US Actions in Foreign Affairs, Introduced by Paul Kaplan

The US operation that extracted Maduro from Venezuela to face trial in the US, and subsequent statement from the White House, raises a number of concerns. Let us consider the following questions:

  1. Is the US acting as if it were above international law?
  2. What concerns does the focus on Venezuela’s oil fields raise?
  3. What other countries could be the target of a similar operation?
  4. How should Canada respond to the extraction operation and subsequent threats to other countries?
  5. Does Canada need to find other allies and trading partners?
  6. How should other countries in the western hemisphere respond the US making it a “sphere of influence?”
  7. Might Russia and China follow the US’s example, and claim that their neighbors fall in their respective “spheres of influence,” making them free to take actions against their neighbors without respect for international law?

Meet our diverse group, trade perspectives in a free and open forum and learn from others as they learn from you!

BTW: don't be concerned if there are not many RSVP’s. Many HAT members attend regularly but don’t sign up on Meetup. Our online meetings have been very popular with 20-30 attendees.

NOTE: The HAT Forum adheres strictly to the City of Toronto Policy on Non-Discrimination (http://www.the519.org/public/content/policy-files/The519SpaceUsePolicy.pdf)
