Every Saturday we meet on Zoom to discuss a topic decided upon the previous week. These are topics of humanist interest, from a humanist perspective.

The topic of the discussion will be decided in a prior meeting, usually two weeks in advance. This week’s topic is: What is currently the biggest affront to humanist values in Toronto? Introduced by Richard Dowsett
The Forum, discussion from a Humanist perspective, is made possible by the Humanist Association of Toronto. We are a registered charity in Canada with a mission to “grow Humanism, a secular, rational and compassionate worldview through education, connection and community involvement in Toronto”.

As stated, our values are “secular, rational and compassionate” at their core and are more fully expressed in Section 3, Declaration of Principles, of HAT’s Constitution. Using these values (or any other Humanist values you might profess) as a lens, each of us can view the state of affairs that surround us and decide how we can act, as individuals and as groups (like HAT), to move the needle in a positive direction.

It is too easy in these turbulent times with global scale problems to get downhearted about our ability to continue to make positive change. I would like our smart and resourceful group to brainstorm areas where we can make an impact. The eye of the brainstorm I am suggesting can be found by answering the question, “What is currently the biggest affront to Humanist Values in Toronto?”

To prime the pump, I might suggest some possible areas of examination:
Homelessness
Loneliness
The Immigrant Experience
Civility in discourse
Racism
Irrationality
Censorship
…and there are certainly others. Let’s talk about it!

Meet our diverse group, trade perspectives in a free and open forum and learn from others as they learn from you!

BTW: don't be concerned if there are not many RSVP’s. Many HAT members attend regularly but don’t sign up on Meetup. Our online meetings have been very popular with 20-30 attendees.

NOTE: The HAT Forum adheres strictly to the City of Toronto Policy on Non-Discrimination (http://www.the519.org/public/content/policy-files/The519SpaceUsePolicy.pdf)
