Every Saturday we meet on Zoom to discuss a topic decided upon the previous week. These are topics of humanist interest, from a humanist perspective.
The topic of the discussion will be decided in a prior meeting, usually two weeks in advance. This week’s topic is: Building Bridges
How to Establish Dialogue across Fundamental Disagreements, Introduced by Moses Klein
Humanists as a rule respect differences of opinion, but is that a principle that we can apply effectively in practice?
- Do you try to maintain friendships with people who disagree with ideas (e.g. political, religious) that are core principles to you?
- Where there are fundamental issues of disagreement, do you prefer to avoid the subject or to establish a relationship in which you can discuss your disagreements openly?
- Have you ever had to abandon a friendship because of fundamental political or religious disagreements?
- The Street Epistemology movement (https://www.streetepistemology.com/) advocates trying to promote critical thinking by Socratic questioning; rather than openly expressing disagreement, ask why someone believes what they believe. Do you ever engage in this kind of interaction? In what contexts?
Meet our diverse group, trade perspectives in a free and open forum and learn from others as they learn from you!
BTW: don't be concerned if there are not many RSVP’s. Many HAT members attend regularly but don’t sign up on Meetup. Our online meetings have been very popular with 20-30 attendees.
