Governor La Trobe's cottage (Also HA's Birthday and Human Rights Day!)
Details
NOTE: THERE IS A FOUR WEEK GAP FROM LAST EVENT (To cater for the fact both leaders are attending the Secular Conference in Sydney on 2nd Dec)
For this event we'll be visiting the National Trust property Governor La Trobe's cottage, where because it's December they will be featuring "how Sophie La Trobe introduced the European custom of the Christmas tree to Melbourne.". After a look around we'll move to a cafe for refreshments and time to discuss what we've seen. Looking around the garden and cottage costs $5 but you need to book online ahead of time. The only booking time shown is 1pm, but we can go in anytime between 1pm and 3.30pm. Our plan is to go in as a group (or two depending on our numbers) soon after 2pm. The property will close at 4pm. If you don't book you can still join us outside the cottage and wait while those who've booked go in. Visiting this site suggests several options for discussion - see below. There are some cafes nearby, or if the group decides to do so on the day, we may move back up to Riverland Bar near Flinders Street Station for our food and coffee/drinks.
The date is also Humanists Australia's third birthday and World Human Rights Day, so we will do something brief to acknowledge that.
Discuss topics?
Early Melb/Naarm colony history (1839-1850)? Colonization, growth, independence then federation? La Trobe the man, and the family? Humanists and Christmas? We could also discuss group ideas and plans for next year if you'd like to.
