TURNING POINTS ON THE CIVIL RIGHTS TRAIL (Updated)

This event is a ZOOM PowerPoint presentation by Lillian Dean. It is hosted by the Humanists of the Birmingham Unitarian Church, and is open to all interested Humanists. It is listed as a courtesy by the Humanists of Southeast Michigan, but is not necessarily endorsed by the HSEM.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The U.S. Civil Rights Trail is a collection of museums and landmarks in the American South and beyond where fearless activists played pivotal roles in advancing social justice in the 1950s and 1960s. It was a movement which changed America.

In April 2022, Lillian Dean participated in a small-group tour sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Road Scholar, the Living Legacy Project, and various universities and religious organizations are now sponsoring similar trips.

With photographs and time line information, Lillian will highlight selected Civil Rights Trail sites in Georgia and Alabama, with links to sites in Detroit. She will explain why a visit to the South can be a powerful experience which enhances our commitment to continue the work of racial justice.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
As a retired environmental planning consultant, Lillian Dean coordinates SOCWA Healthy Gardens Project and also leads architectural walking tours in Detroit and in Richmond, Virginia. At BUC, Lillian is a member of the Racial Justice Team which helps to promote the “Pledge to End Racism.” Lillian and her husband, Walter, have been members of BUC since 1984.
