What we’re about
Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the Humanists of Wisconsin, we’ve got just one rule: you’ve got to be kind.
We are a community of atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, and secular folks who believe that the best way to solve human problems is with human solutions. We don’t wait for miracles; we make plans. We believe in reason, compassion, and the radical idea that we are all in this together.
What is Humanism? Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity. In plain English? It means we care about people more than dogma. It means we trust science to explain the world and art to make it beautiful. It means this life is the only one we know we have, so we’d better make it a good one.
Being a humanist in Wisconsin isn't just about what you don't believe; it's about what you do. Here is how we turn our values into action in the Badger State:
1. We Show Up for Our Neighbors Humanism is compassion in action. In Wisconsin, that means partnering with local secular groups and non-religious charities. We organize food drives, clean up our beautiful state parks, and support public education. We believe that since we’re all stuck on this rock together, we might as well make it a nice place to live.
2. We Defend the Wall (of Separation) Wisconsin has a long history of independent thought, but the line between church and state can get a little blurry. We keep an eye on local school boards and city councils to ensure that government remains neutral and inclusive. We advocate for policy based on evidence and reason, not scripture.
3. We Build Community In a world that can feel increasingly isolated, we create spaces for connection. We host humanist pub nights, book clubs, and solstice parties. We offer a home for those leaving high-control religions and a community for families raising ethical, inquisitive kids without religious indoctrination.
4. We Champion Human Rights Because we believe in the inherent dignity of every human being, we are natural allies in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, and racial justice
