Trough Springs History Hike
Monte Sano South, Monte Sano South Parking, 1901-1999 Monte Sano Blvd SE, Huntsville, AL 35801, Huntsville, AL, USTrough Springs is located up Governor's Drive to the top of Monte Sano. There is a gravel parking lot with parking and historic marker. There is no need to go through the main park entrance or pay any fee. The historic spring was used by the areas earliest settlers and significant for a Civil War surrender by local partisans that occurred at the end of the war.
The descent is a meandering trail into the forest at the edge of Monte Sano and maintained by the park, the Land Trust, and Burritt. The hike is easy enough for even very inexperienced hikers, and there's no need for any special provisions beyond sturdy shoes.
I sometimes wonder what it was like, to live in Huntsville when there were no cars, no door dash or paved roads we all take for granted, when hiking wasn't an escape from the modern world but how one got from point A to B. You will get a small taste.
