- Creative Writing!
Welcome to the Hurricane Valley Creative Comedy & Writing meetup! This group is perfect for anyone looking to develop their comedic voice and/or has a passion for writing. Whether you're a seasoned writer looking to share your work, someone who enjoys making people laugh, or simply interested in tapping into your creativity, this is the perfect place for you. Join us for comedy workshops, writer groups, and/or open mic nights where we can come together and enjoy the power of creativity. Our menu includes standup comedy, improv, short story & novel writing, and screenwriting. Let's inspire each other, learn together, and most importantly, have a great time!
Discover a safe, supportive opportunity to find and refine your creativity, both written and spoken word! Whether your interest is writing or comedy (stand-up and/or improv), join like-minded individuals for weekly workshops designed to overcome creative blocks, enhance confidence, and improve skills.
Group activities will be based on member interest, but may include:
Writers Workshops
Small group (8 or less) sessions where participants are encouraged to bring material each week to share and receive real-time constructive feedback within a supportive critique environment. All forms of creative writing are welcome: as membership grows, workshops may support specialized groups with a particular focus, such as Science Fiction & Fantasy, memoir, non-fiction, etc.
Screenwriters Workshops
Group sessions where individuals are encouraged to bring material each week to share AND/OR participate in table reads of their original works, all within a supportive critique environment. Ideal for screenwriters, actors, and those with an interest in television & film.
Virtual Screenwriters Workshops
Online group sessions where individuals are encouraged to bring material each week to share AND/OR participate in table reads of their original works, all within a supportive critique environment. Ideal for screenwriters, actors, and those with an interest in television & film.
Monthly Interactive Writers Discussion
Large group interactive session addressing various topics of interest to the membership. Possibilities include author talks, special guests, roundtable discussions, writer panels, etc.
Stand-Up Open Mic
Rehearse your set and try out new material in a fun, safe, and supportive environment... You'll have a stage, live mic, and real-time constructive feedback (from your colleagues, not the mic) to help enhance your comedic skills.
Stand-Up Workshops
Practice the essentials of stand up through this hands-on, 8-week series of workshops. We'll review the "Natural Laws of Laughter" and how to put them to use to enhance your own comedy sets. Each workshop is a stand-alone unit, but will build upon what's been presented previously.
Bring your existing material (or start from scratch) along with a notepad and pen. The workshop will consist of discussion, exercises, and rehearsal, all with the intent of refining your set and repertoire. We may also occasionally venture out into the real-world to perform at live open mic's in the region!
Improv Workshops
Exercise your comedic muscles in a fun, safe, and supportive environment... Build self-confidence and discover powerful techniques to improve your public speaking abilities.
Refine your listening skills, develop new voices & characters, use your body, and engage your audience with hilarious authenticity. You'll have a stage, occasional props, and real-time supportive feedback to help enhance your improv skills through warm-ups and a variety of improv games. We may also occasionally venture out into the real-world to watch live improv shows in the region!
Never done improv or stand-up before?
Although priority will be given to those looking to refine and rehearse their existing craft, rookies are welcome to attend and learn-by-example subject to space restrictions. While instruction per se is not the primary objective of this meet-up, there will be a focus on reinforcing good technique and observing the "Natural Laws of Laughter."
Note: All are welcome subject to space constraints. Suggested donations are likely less than you'd spend at starbucks simply thinking about writing or being funny (and your beverage is included), but don't let a lack of funds discourage your participation.
