Bear Mountain Monday - Sunset hike

Bear Mountain Inn

Join us for a faster paced workout at Bear Mountain. *This is not a beginner hike.* We will ascend on the Major Welch trail (red circle), and then make a sharp right turn at the elevation peak following blue trail markers and then follow the (white rectangle) AT trail South to moon rocks for sunset. You must feel comfortable completing the hike on your own should you fall behind or separate from the group. There is no sweep. If you are unsure whether or not this is for you, please message me with any questions prior to the day of the hike. Make sure you have a copy of the Bear Mountain map (or know the route), a working headlamp, and 1-2 liters of water. Please arrive by 6:25PM, as we will start the hike at 6:30PM, sharp. Distance: ~4 miles Gain: ~1200' on the ascent Hike time: ~2 hours HUDSON VALLEY HIKER LEGAL DISCLAIMER & WAIVER OF LIABILITY You agree when you sign up for this group or any of the events that you have read and understand the below. Breakneck Wednesday Hike!

Breakneck Ridge

FLEXIBLE START TIME!!!! WE DO NOT START IN A GROUP AT THE SAME TIME. ***FAST AFTER WORK HIKE! CURE FOR THE COMMON WORK WEEK! FLEXIBLE START TIME! *** ***READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE ATTENDING! Note to first-timers, if you have never attended this hike before please sit this one out and join us on one of the times we do it on a weekend.*** Use this link for directions to the trailhead: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.445686,-73.979446&num=1&t=h&z=17 Make sure you have a copy of the map, a headlamp, a charged cellphone, and 1 liter of water, minimum. Going up the white trail (BR), then left on red (BB) and left on yellow (WM). https://parks.ny.gov/parks/attachments/HudsonHighlandsTrailMapNorth.pdf We will spend some time socializing at a lookout point just before the junction of the Red trail before our descent. Please start earlier if you think you will take longer. Note that the park closes at sunset so our goal is to get back to our cars well before it becomes dark. That said, you MUST bring a headlamp just in case. If you run into any trouble, call me immediately on my cell which is listed in the description. Total distance is 3.1 miles approx. and we expect to finish in around 1.5-2 hours. The elevation gain is almost 1400' so be prepared to climb, especially in the steep beginning. Though a short hike, this is widely considered to be one of the most strenuous hikes in the lower Hudson valley, hence why it takes so long to complete. Park in the large lot 0.2 miles NORTH of the tunnel. Richard[masked]
