Bear Mountain Monday Holiday Hike: Sunset + Ornament
Details
Join us for a beautiful holiday hike up Bear Mountain. We will be stopping at Moon Rocks for sunset and then heading to the Christmas ornament stationed at the top of Bear during the holiday season. Microspikes and headlamp required.
Park in PARKING LOT #2 by the skating rink. We will meet right in front of the skating rink. There is a detour to the Major Welch trails due to construction. Please make sure you are parking and meeting us in the correct lot.
We will meet at the Bear Mountain skating rink (lot #2). We'll ascend on the Suffern Bear Mountain trail (yellow rectangle) and then make a right, following the detour to get to the junction of the AT and SBM. We will then pick up the Major Welch trail (red circle on white blaze) going clockwise around the lake and up the mountain. After 1.65 miles, make a sharp RIGHT TURN where the Major Welch and Appalachian Trails merge and follow the AT South (white rectangle) to Moon Rocks for sunset. After a break for sunset, we will descend to the inn on the AT North (white rectangle). We will make a detour to stop at the Christmas ornament on the way down.
While we will try our best to stay together, faster hikers are not obligated to wait for slower hikers. You should feel comfortable completing the hike on your own should you fall behind or separate from the group.
Sunset is at 4:30pm.
