Catskill 3500's - Blackhead - ~5 miles

** You must have prior experience hiking similar Catskill peaks in icy winter conditions.
** If the dirt road at end of Big Hollow to the trailhead is not plowed or passable, park on shoulder and walk to trailhead.
The hike:
We'll start hiking at 11:30am. You must be able to navigate and hike on your own if you choose to hike at a faster or slower pace than other members.
The route:
- From the trailhead at the end of Big Hollow Road, we'll take the Red Trail a short distance to the Yellow Trail.
- Turn left onto Yellow.
- Turn right onto blue Escarpment Trail and head up to summit of Blackhead.
- At summit, turn right onto yellow and head to red trail.
- Turn right onto red and head downhill to parking lot.
Difficulty: one steep uphill; it will be very icy in spots.
Pace: moderate/brisk -average 2.1-2.2 mph
Total distance: ~5 miles for Blackhead + 3 more mi to add the others
Elevation Gain: ~2000 ft.
Gear: Moisture-wicking clothes; clothing for very cold, windy conditions; water; snacks/lunch; microspikes, trail crampons or similar multipoint traction with sharp teeth; snowshoes; headlamp
NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, and lights. You should review topographic maps and trail features carefully; understanding topography of any hike is key to your knowing where you are, where you're going, and how to get back.
