Rachid NE111 & NH48 FINALE'S-Jefferson, Washy & The Southern Presidentials
Details
Let's join our friend Rachid on his final day of his New Hampshire 48 journey!!
OPTION #1: Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington via Caps Ridge & then the Southern Presidential traverse
Rachid & Paul will be leading this hike
Meet at the Caps Ridge parking lot on Jefferson Notch Road.
Begin on the Caps Ridge Trail on Jefferson Notch Road. Hike up (2.5 miles total & ~2,700' climb) after 2.1 miles you will reach the intersection of The Cornice. Here you will want to stay straight, continuing along the Caps Ridge Trail for another 0.4 miles to the summit of Mount Jefferson (elev. 5712'). The first half of the hike is fairly easy on dirt/rocky ground, while the second half is much more difficult, including rock scrambles and difficult terrain. The Caps Ridge Trail is one of the official "terrifying 25" (T25) trails.
After you leave the summit of Mount Jefferson you take the Gulfside Trail (.7 miles & ~750 climb) towards Mount Clay & have the option to summit Mount Clay (elev. 5,533') or you can bypass the summit, that is 1.5 miles if you choose the summit.
from Mount Clay it is another 1.7 miles on the Mount Clay Loop Trail, then roughly .5 mile on the Great Gulf Trail with (~1,100' climb) to the summit Mount Washington (6,288').
OPTION #2: Mt. Washington via Huntington Ravine & then the Southern Presidential Traverse
Tony F & Kimberly will be leading this hike
Mount Washington via Huntington and Tuckerman Ravine Trails is a difficult hiking route covering 8.7 miles (14.0 km). You will gain 4315 feet (1315 meters) in elevation over an estimated 6 hours and 6 minutes. This challenging journey takes you through the rugged White Mountain National Forest.
## What to expect on Mount Washington via Huntington and Tuckerman Ravine Trails
Prepare for an exceptionally rugged and scenic experience as you ascend Mount Washington. The trail offers dramatic views, starting with water crossings and waterfalls like Crystal Cascade below the treeline. Once above, you'll traverse the impressive glacial cirques of Huntington and Tuckerman Ravines, leading to the unique alpine environment of The Alpine Gardens before reaching the summit cone.
## Planning your visit
This route is considered one of the most difficult and dangerous in the White Mountains, especially the Huntington Ravine portion.
Do not attempt it under wet conditions due to slippery rock slabs, and be prepared for Mount Washington's extreme, unpredictable weather. Descending Huntington Ravine Trail is strongly discouraged.
