The Hike - We start hiking at 9:15am. Please arrive earlier to get ready and/or buy your day pass. This hike involves some great rock scrambles, tight crevices, ledges and, of course, great views!! We will be on the Mohonk Preserve as well as the Mohonk Mountain House resort property. *We will be on easy carriage roads for at least 6 of the total miles as the carriage roads connect to the rock scrambles. We will do scrambling through areas such as Giants Workshop, Humpty Dumpty, Arching Rocks, Eagle Cliff, the Labyrinth/Lemon Squeeze, the Crevice and Skytop Tower.
The route:
- Starting from the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center, head north through parking lots and take the yellow connector trail .
- Climb the 249 stone "Stairmaster" up hill to the Undercliff Carriage Rd.
- Turn right onto the carriage road and continue 1.8 miles to Laurel Ledge Carriage Rd.
- Take Laurel Ledge about 1/4 mile to Giants Workshop footpath and let the fun begin!!.
- After Giants Workshop/Humpty Dumpty area, we will climb up the boulder field to top of Eagle Cliff for some great views.
- Follow paths down to Lake Mohonk and walk counterclockwise until reaching the Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze..
- Traverse the tight crevices of the Labyrinth and then cross the boulder field to the entrance to the large crevice.
- Once up and through the crevice, take lunch break on the cliff.
- Head to Skytop Tower for more amazing views.
- Follow footpaths back down and head to Cope's Lookout and Arching Rocks for some more more scrambling.
- Make way to Laurel Ledge Rd and Undercliff Rd to return to cars.
Distance: approx. 9.5 miles (about 6 miles will be on easy carriage roads and footpaths)
Elevation gain: Approx. 2,000 feet total elevation gain
Difficulty: 2.2-2.3 mph average pace; crevices, tight rock scrambles, ledges
Gear: Appropriate footwear; moisture-wicking clothing for warmer temperatures; collapsible poles may be helpful for some people; water; snacks/lunch
