How to Create a Startup with Med Devices and Shoestrings

Details

I appreciate your patience with my utterly cryptic first title for this month's meetup. And I appreciate even more your hopefully not misguided faith in us to RSVP anyway!

Here are those satisfying details I promised, along with a more descriptive title:

Healthcare technology offers on the one hand, an opportunity to deeply improve the health of humans around the globe. But on the other hand, a complicated web of regulation and bureacracy. Conventional wisdom states that healthcare startups require millions of dollars in capital to get off the ground, leaving would-be starter-uppers looking for greener pastures.

David Kay will challenge your assumptions about the capital costs of starting a health-tech company by taking us on a deep dive into building a meaningful med device startup on a shoe-string budget.

In this whirlwind tour, we'll look at real-world examples of to build a capital-efficient medical device startup from the ground up, covering topics including:

• Making smart technology decisions

• To patent or not to patent?

• Mitigating pain and capital expense by intelligently navigating the regulatory process

• Buy vs build?

• The fundamentals of HIPAA

• Software and hardware prototyping

• Tech transfer: friend or foe?

• Exit Strategy

Please note that while this talk is primarily aimed at startups interested in selling their products in the USA, much of the content will be relevant for those looking to gain Health Canada approval and sell to the Canadian market.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday!
