£1 walk - Pontefract Castle

A walk of around 15,000 steps to burn off some calories finishing at the castle.

We will discover a ruined chapel, church and castle along the way of The Liquorice Trail and take a circuit of the racecourse near the park.

We will start at the Hope and Anchor pub in Pontefract and head down towards the ruins of All Saints Church then towards the town walking along Gillygate, Horsefair, Beastfair and Cornmarket (some of the local streets) in what is still an attractive market town with an interesting mix of architecture in Pontefract centre. You can read some of the blue plaques en route.

Heading into the Haribo shop for a quick purchase then about 5 minutes along a busy road, crossing by Aspire into Pontefract Park and around the duck pond and horse racing track. We will then circle back going through the cemetery and finish off with a slower paced stroll around Pontefract Castle (main pic above) and take in the view.

MEETING POINT
Meet outside the Hope and Anchor pub in Pontefract, postcode WF8 1ES at 10.25 for 10.30 start.

FOOTWEAR
Probably OK in trainers, however if there has been wet weather beforehand, walking boots advised as there might be some slippery sections.

PARKING
A few options :
In front of the pub,
In front of All Saints Church (top end),
Roadside by the church,
Pontefract Castle car park which is up the cobbled street,
Aldi opposite the church.

Navigate to the church using What3Words ///sobs.senses.secret or use the postcode provided for the pub meeting spot.

WEATHER
I will cancel this walk if raining so watch this space on the day.

DOGS
Well behaved dogs on short leads are welcome.

LOOS
In the pub, in the grounds of the castle and in the town.

CAUTIONS
A couple of little hills, some cobbles, steps that could be slippery. One section (about 5 mins each way) is alongside a busy main road. A dungeon if you are not well-behaved.
