ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Writers, actors, filmmakers, artists, designers, and other creatives are taught young that choosing to be a creative professional is risky business.
It's not.
What's risky is doing something you don't love for most of your life. You're not likely to be great at it, and even if you are, you still have to do something you don't love for a living. How much are the days of your life worth?
If you want to create what you love for a living, you've made a smart decision. Now let's work on making that decision pay off for you. In this workshop we're going to talk about the things family, friends, and teachers didn't tell you.
They also didn't tell you how to get nuclear fusion working. If you haven't made a living as a creative entrepreneur you have no idea how it's done. Even the most well-meaning people on earth can't tell you what they don't know.
In this workshop you'll learn:
- Why earning a living as a creative looks like luck or magic from the outside.
- Why it is not the tight-rope walk you've been told it is since you were born.
- Why earning a living as a creative is a lot like starting a fire and why that's a very good thing. Note, it is also like farming and fishing, and after this talk you'll understand why good metaphors are very important.
- How to figure out how to get paid for work you want to do.
- How to find fans and turn them into paying customers.
- How to sidestep people and companies that get in the way
- Why taking big risks, and making big investments, usually doesn't pay off, but running lots of little experiments almost always does.
- A few things you are going to get good at because the will guarantee you get paid.
- Why creatives are amazing at starting strong businesses, especially when they play to their passions and their strengths.
- We'll talk about when and how luck and magic play a role in significant success, and how you can get "luckier" and "more magical" through practical means.
This is a very practical, brass-tacks, rational workshop. There will be suggestions and solutions that work here in the real world.
