Gherkin is dead, long live BDD?

Exploring the future of BDD with model-based approaches and AI
ICT Netherlands, in collaboration with TNO ESI, invites you to an interactive evening on the future of Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) and the role of model-based approaches and AI.
Text-based BDD (with Gherkin) has helped bridge the gap between specification and implementation. Yet many organizations struggle with recurring challenges: the high effort of creating and maintaining scenarios, limited expressiveness, and little insight into coverage and quality.
TNO ESI is exploring how model-based approaches can provide a powerful alternative. Instead of relying on manually written scenarios, formal models become the basis for test generation, impact analysis, regression test selection, and quality assessment. This shift promises more efficient collaboration, deeper insights into risks, and opens up new opportunities for integrating AI into BDD.
In this session, we will jointly explore:
- The limitations of text-based BDD and their impact in practice.
- How model-based approaches can strengthen and extend BDD.
- Insights and examples from ongoing research projects.
- First impressions of using LLMs to migrate legacy tests (GTest) into a Gherkin-based BDD framework, and to support users in creating models.
Agenda
- 17:00 – 17:30 | Walk-in
- 17:30 – 18:15 | Dinner
- 18:15 – 20:30 | Interactive session by TNO ESI
- 20:30 – 21:00 | Closing drinks
✨ A unique opportunity to explore how BDD is evolving — and how model-based approaches and AI play a role in shaping its future.
This event is part of "ICT Knowledge Hub"
ICT Knowledge Hub is the collective name for a series of interactive theme evenings where we dive into the depths of modern system development together. From Living Documentation to testing, from requirements to Domain-Driven Design: each event offers inspiration, practical experiences and directly applicable tools.
The evenings are meant for professionals who want to learn, reflect and connect, whether you are a developer, analyst, tester, product owner or researcher. Together, we build a community of like-minded people who are curious about better collaboration, smarter approaches and sustainable solutions.
ICT Knowledge Hub is organised by ICT Improve in collaboration with ICT Group. We invite speakers from the field as well as from academia, and offer space to anyone with something valuable to share.
Come and listen, join the discussion, and learn together from each other's practice and perspective.
