Pace for Peace Community Walk & Learn: Refugee & Climate Justice
Details
Please register here! (registering on MeetUp alone will NOT guarantee you a spot!)
Join the Idaho Sierra Club and Pace for Peace for a community "walk & learn" for refugee & climate justice! We'll meet at a park along the Boise Greenbelt (exact location given after RSVP) to kick off the event with coffee, tea, and community-building together. Then, we'll head out on an approximately 1.5 hour, 2- to 2.5-mile walk along paved sections of the Greenbelt and through the MK Nature Center, stopping occasionally to take in the views and take a breather as needed.
At the end of the event, we'll gather back together to share dinner, and talk about how climate change is impacting our local communities in Idaho, communities in the global south, and refugee communities around the world. There will be space for folks to share their stories and learn together about how we can use grassroots activism as a tool for fighting for both climate and refugee justice. We will also explore upcoming avenues you can take grassroots action in your community: from a rally calling for a Just Transition to clean energy to advocating for community solar gardens in your neighborhood. We hope you can make it!
What to expect:
2:00 pm │ Arrive, do group intros, safety discussion, & share coffee/tea together to build community
2:30 pm │ Begin nature walk
4:00 pm │ Return to park, community-building & free picnic lunch (assorted sandwiches from Boise Co-op). Community discussion: how is climate change impacting communities locally and abroad? How can we use grassroots activism to fight for climate and refugee justice? Learn more about local grassroots action you can engage in.
4:30-5pm │ Event concludes, folks can stick around for a bit to hang out or visit the community solar mural nearby if they'd like!
More info about trail/activity difficulty, skill level, and safety
The route is a 2- to 2.5-mile walk (distance will depend on pace of group - we will adjust as needed!) with approximately 20ft elevation gain on a paved trail along the Boise Greenbelt and through the MK Nature Center. We will take stops as needed, and work to go at a speed that works for everyone. If we do need to split into groups based on pace, we will make sure there is a leader nearby each group. Please reach out if you have any questions about the difficulty level of the route or what to expect, or if there's anything we can do to help make this trip accessible for you!
We will have a stocked first aid kit and extra water to share for anyone who needs it.
